Not a Spooky Show

Before the curtain rose on ‘Ghosts’, I had the opportunity to photograph the dress rehearsal. This latest offering by Scugog’s Borelians Theatre Company, is now playing at the Town Hall Theatre in Port Perry.

Do not let the title mislead you. It is far from a Halloween spectacle or a rival to ‘Beetlejuice’. Instead, ‘Ghosts’ presents a piercing portrayal of a family dealing with long-buried secrets. Without revealing too much, it is safe to say the story navigates some challenging and very human territory, offering a raw, emotional experience not often seen in local theatre.

The play is based on a book by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, written in Danish and published in 1881. Its first production took place in Chicago in 1882, and it sparked controversy for its bold themes. Despite the uproar, the play struck a chord, reflecting truths that many people found all too familiar in their own lives.

Under the direction of Matthew Imray, the performances are nothing short of remarkable. Deborah Lobban takes on the lead role, delivering a performance that draws on her vast experience from television and film. She may be recognizable from her roles in ‘Degrassi High’ or ‘Alias Grace’, but here, she disappears into her character with a depth and authenticity that is captivating to watch.

John Sellins portrays Pastor Manders with precision, while Alistair McNamara brings intensity to the character of Oswald. Ari Todd and Howard Linscott complete the talented ensemble, each of them adding a layer of believability that pulls the audience into the unfolding drama from the very start. I should mention, Ari Todd, an amzing talent, produced the show..

The Borelians Theatre Company has delivered something extraordinary with this production, challenging the audience with its intense subject matter and thoughtful performances. Carolyn Gogh, a member of the Borelians sums it up well, reminding us never to underestimate the intelligence of an audience, or their desire to be provoked and moved by what they see on stage.

The production continues this weekend at the Town Hall Theatre in Port Perry. For more details, visit townhalltheatre.ca or call 905-985-8181.
